Today morning, I was brimming with confidence, walking up 11 flights, no wait, 12 flights of stairs from this week onwards to a male ward. Finally, I thought. I don't have to feel awkward dealing with breasts anymore since I'm going to a male ward.
So, I sauntered into the ward, introduced myself to the Sister and off I went on my own. I stood in front of a patient, casually looked at his case file and I thought I could strike a conversation with him easily.
FengY : Hello! Good morning Uncle!
Patient : *stares*
FengY : Uncle, is it okay if I ask you a few questions?
Patient : No, no la. Not this morning.
Okay, I thought maybe he wasn't feeling that well although he looked pretty in the pink of health to me. So, I got rejected the first time ever. Then, I proceeded to the patient next to the first uncle.
FengY : Uncle! Jou San! (Good morning)
Patient : *blank, expressionless stare*
FengY : *speechless*
The second uncle then proceeded to get up and walked away from his bed and never wanted to return to his bed as I was standing around there. He stood in the walkway, looked left, looked right, looked everywhere in fact except for his bed and sort of refused to return. Sigh! 2nd failure!
So, having tried in English and Chinese to an Indian and Chinese patient, I thought trying to speak Malay to a Malay patient would give me more luck since I have not failed using that before.
FengY : Pakcik! Selamat Pagi!
Patient : ...
FengY : Pakcik, nak tanya soalan skit boleh?
Patient : Tak mahu, tak mahu! Hari hari tanya soalan! I tak mahu jawab! I letih! Tak mahu, tak mahu!
FengY : Ok ok, takpe ye pakcik *quickly scurries away*
Wah! And I thought he was pretty cultured reading some book. Boo hoo hoo! I get 3 rejections in 3 attempts! The male patients must have PMS! At that moment I thought how wonderful it was to be back in a female ward. Yes, although examining the chest can be pretty awkward but at least nobody says no to a simple chit chat. Oh no! How am I going to survive the next 2 weeks?
p.s. Everyone is hitting me so hard, I think I really have to save a lot! Hopefully you won't over hit my monthly allowance!
